GNUWin: Open Source in Windows

THIS WEEK'S column centres on the various open-source programs available for Windows and introduces an ongoing project which was launched for compiling/hosting/distributing Windows-based open-source/free soft- ware.

Regular readers of this column may be familiar with the concepts/dynamics of the open-source/free software movement that is growing stronger by the day. One of the fascinating projects of the free software movement is the GNU ('GNU's Not Unix'- http://www.gnu.org') project, which was initiated to develop a complete Unix-like free operating system. The phenomenal success of the project has led to many independent free-software projects for developing a wide range of software products that include utilities, application packages and programming languages.
